Mediate: A Message from a Founder of Berkeley Tutors Network, Raymond Barglow, Ph.D.

Until this year, we have done all of our tutoring here in the Bay Area, meeting with students one-on-one to help them prepare to take the SAT or ACT and/or do well in their school work.  At the same time, we’ve been aware that, with the introduction of new technologies, the vehicles of education are rapidly changing.  This past spring we released on-line SAT and ACT preparation programs — programs that for several years now we’ve been researching and developing.

Taking our tutoring on-line has been a team effort, involving educational experts, tutors, and of course the high school students who have used our programs to raise their test-taking skill levels.  We were pretty confident, when we began this project, that our ideas about learning motivation and success — deriving from the pioneering work of John Dewey and refined by recent research into the nature of learning — would help us build effective educational materials.  And the results we’re seeing, in terms of the high test scores achieved by our students, are ample reward for the work we’ve done!

Our approach to on-line education combines self-paced learning with personal one-on-one tutoring.  While we take every advantage of today’s cutting-edge technologies, a personal relationship between a tutor or “learning coach” and the student remains indispensable. Students need and appreciate the guidance they receive not only from a web-based program but from a person.  When a student and a mentor work together, learning happens: SAT and ACT scores go up, students get better grades in school.

We invite you to learn more about our approach to test preparation.  On this website you will find a variety of materials that explain our methods and our aims.  Please contact us if you’d like to know more about the programs we offer.
